Choosing art you want to live with

Flower Bearers, a limited edition print by Brahim Jawabreh

Sometimes you know immediately. A colour, a figure or a small detail holds your attention, and you keep going back to look. That is a good place to start when choosing art.

You do not need to have the whole room planned. You do need to enjoy looking at the work.

Look before you match

It can be tempting to choose a print because it matches the cushions. Try setting that aside for a moment. What would you notice about the piece if you saw it somewhere else? Is there something in its subject, colour or composition that makes you want to spend more time with it?

A room can make space for a work you love. It does not all have to share the same palette.

Give the size a trial run

Measure the wall, then mark out the proposed dimensions with paper or removable tape. Look at it from the doorway and from where you usually sit. A size that seems generous on a screen can look surprisingly small above a sofa.

Check whether the listed measurements refer to the image, the paper or the framed piece. Those differences matter when you are working around furniture or planning a group of works.

Think about the frame early

A frame changes the way a print sits in a room. A simple narrow frame can keep your attention on the work. A mount adds space around it. Before ordering, read the listing carefully to see what is included and whether the piece arrives framed or unframed.

Ask your framer about suitable glazing and where you plan to hang it, especially if the wall receives strong daylight.

Leave room for the next thing

You do not have to fill every wall at once. One piece can be enough for now. Give it time, move it if you want to, and let the rest of the room take shape around the things you choose to keep.
